It’s about time isn’t it? Thing’s were looking rough for the birds going into last weeks matchup against the Washington redskins, but luckily for the first time in a month the Eagles came out with a W. A much needed W going into the week 7 bye. That being said we have no game to preview for this Sunday so we’re going to go through the good, the bad and the ugly of this Vick-tory. Since I’m an optimist at times we’ll save the best for last and start with the bad.
Despite coming out with a big win last Sunday there were some obvious holes that had me concerned on both the offense and defense. Starting with the offense, four trips into the red zone and only 2 touchdowns was good enough to beat the redskins, but if this team is going to come together and make a playoff run the red zone has to become more of a focus and priority Monday-Friday because it’s obvious calling QB draws, dives to Owen Schmidt and whatever the heck Ronnie Brown was thinking against San Francisco this team is lost and unprepared for red zone opportunities particularly inside the 5 yard line. Moving on through the offense, I know a lot of the load can fall onto Michael Vick at times, but he needs to make better decisions under pressure. Yes, he has very little time to make a move, but you have to learn from your mistakes. That turnover bug is still hanging around and one of the two came off of Michael Vick throwing directly at a rush and the ball was tipped. After throwing a pick that very same way against buffalo it was not too promising to see him doing it two weeks in a row especially after he had gotten away with two tipped balls earlier in the game that were fortunate enough to not get picked. Outside of that I can’t complain too much about the O-line who’s battling injury and adjusting to that pretty well. They’re still not giving Vick an ideal amount of time to throw, but some progress is certainly better than no progress I suppose.
So let’s cover the ugly. I’ve been giving a lot of flack to the coaching on this team and upon further review I’ve been absolutely right, except it only falls on one member of the coaching and I think you all pretty well know who that is. I know everyone wants to get on Jaun, but who put him in the position he’s in? When Jaun interviewed for the defensive coordinator position he had to pitch what his game plan was. If he’s pitching the wide nine to Andy Reid and the rest of the management and they feel that’s the best option it’s Andy, Joe Banner and Howie Roseman’s job to provide Jaun with the tools he needs to make the wide nine work which they did not do. That’s one, two is a point I mentioned earlier which was this team has looked lost and clearly unprepared in the red zone. From Ronnie Brown to fourth and short falling short more times than not that falls onto the coaches and the play calling because it’s not like this team can’t move the ball. They’ll go 60 yards on 5 plays with ease, but than can’t go the remaining 5 yards into the promise land on 4 plays? What’s that telling you? I don’t know if Andy Reid is trying to get fired, but I swear I’m waiting to see him dragging trophies behind his car George Constanza style through the Novacare Complex parking lot. 3 is very simple, by far the ugliest part of last weeks win was 20 points in the first half of the game and 0 in the second half. I can explain that just as simply as 1 sentence. The Eagles had 20 rushes in the first half of the game and just 8 in second and the majority of those 8 were on the final drive to kill the clock in hopes washington wouldn’t get an opportunity to tie the game at 20. So basically no rushes in the second half. When all you do is pass the ball you make it so simple for the opposing defense to contain your offense. Not mention you’re ringing the dinner bell above Michael Vick’s head! I see it, you all see it, the rest of the members of respective media sees it, what the heck Andy? You’re like Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Dumbass! Run the freaking ball! How is that not more obvious than ever after beating the redskins? Dominance in the first half, damn near gave the game away in second! Pay attention, would ya?!?!
Ahh finally it’s time for the good. Luckily those 20 first half rushes were enough to keep the offense balanced for the day and Mike Vick under 40 passes who is now 0-9-1 for his career when passing the ball over 40 times in 1 game. Shady McCoy was nothing short of exceptional as he’s been all season and is starting to assert himself as one of the elite running backs in the league. In my opinion, with the exception of Adrian Peterson there’s not a better RB in the NFC than LeSean McCoy. He’s certainly the best in the league at making people miss and creating something from nothing. Next we have the defense. It was like watching a completely different team, wasn’t it? Defense was superb and I wonder why. The defense finally leaned on their strengths. Kurt Coleman with 3 int’s, Nate Allen with another, blitzing to stop the run and forcing Washington to throw into the Eagles scary man coverage, at least one of the coaches finally got the message. Hopefully going into the Linc in week 8 the birds fearless leader will keep in mind the success that this team has ALWAYS had with a balanced attack because a win against the cowboys is about as important as any for the remainder of the season. And my final thoughts for today as always is wrapped up with the most exciting and real segment in sports journalism, my “Ed Lover C’Mon SON! of the week” I’m keeping this one short and sweet because I think this particular individual is going for most consecutive weeks of getting the “C’mon SON!”, Andy Reid you dumb, over baring, over paid, over weight, ego maniac! I know what you’re problem is, you don’t like me, you don’t like the media and you don’t our advice to win, right? Well guess what, you’re 2-4 and your only win is against team with a winning record has been with a balanced attack, you dope! So don’t listen to us Andy. You win when you do and lose when don’t. The choice is yours friend. So for the 5th week straight it my pleasure to say to you, C’Mon SON! RUN THE DAMN BALL and do yourself a favor when you see Shady McCoy run by you, run along side of him! Game time predictions for this Sunday, I guarantee the Eagles do not lose this week! ;) Happy Bye Week Eagles fans!
